Information
Rotterdam- one of Europe’s natural gateways to the world, where the Waal, Rhine and Maas meet the North Sea. The trading city’s port has migrated north over the years and now extends for 30km. It’s getting bigger – the massive Maasvlakte 1 is being joined by Maasvlakte 2- built entirely on reclaimed land. The two new container terminals being built there will more than double the capacity, and ensure that the port can continue to handle the largest vessels available to world trade. The infrastructure to serve these new developments is now largely in place: new barge terminals, quays for feeder vessels and the New Port Line. The rail infrastructure was comprehensively rebuilt and extended as an integral part of the Betuweroute- a dedicated 160km long new rail link to Germany. We consider the port in its context to world shipping, both bulk (mostly iron ore and coal) and unitised, and how the transport modes ‘jockey’ for market share. After a look at some of the most important port traffic flows, we follow the railway and the Maas to Waalhaven,  centre of activity for the feeder vessels. Time to view the Rail Service Centre, and then continue over the new section of the Portline to Barendrecht and Kijfhoek- the largest and most modern freight yard in the Netherlands. The story continues in TTR173 with the ‘country’ section of the line which starts at the southern end of the yard.  Narrated  RT 80 mins filmed in HD. Published November 2012. ©FHP 2012
