Germany Switzerland and Austria share the Bodensee. The German/Swiss main railway line runs along the south shore through the town of Rorschach where local rail company THURBO runs a secondary line to the resort of Romanshorn and on to Kreuzlingen and Konstanz. Konstanz is probably THE place to catch one of the Lake Steamers. Also on the German side is delightful Lindau, a compact town on an island linked to the mainland by a causeway. Of specific railway interest we visit: rackrailway Rorschach-Heiden-Bergbahn, the Bergbahn Rheineck, the Appenzeller Bahnen the SOB and the Trogenbahn. We base ourselves in Switzerland in St Gallen a city that has a raft of canton owned railways including rack railways and a tram-like interurban, that come together at the main station – quite a splash of colour! St Gallen is also on the route of the Zürich to Munich mainline - a route that is currently undergoing a massive modernisation program – a program that will have a major impact on Bodensee communications!
