Welcome to Luzern. A small Swiss city in a big location! A magnificent altstadt with the Chapel Bridge or Kapellbrücke at its centre. But what really makes the city is its location on the Vierwaldstättersee, the German name for Lake Luzern. In this practical guide to the area we: explore the travel opportunities for arrivals, check out some hotels, tour the city and the National Transport Museum and then make a series of day trips starting with the Pilatus round trip: SBB train, the Pilatus rack railway- alleged to be the steepest rack railway in the world, the views from the 2000m high mountain and then a descent using a series of cable cars and finally a trolleybus back to Luzern. Naturally we take a lake excursion courtesy of the Luzern Steamship Company who operate diesel vessels and gorgeous paddlers! The trip begins at the quays by the main station and we run to Brunnen and then follow the Gotthard railway through Sisikon to Flüelen at the base of the lake. We return to Luzern over the Gotthard railway. We also visit mount Rigi which we scale by cable car and a standard gauge funicular railway- the aptly named Rigibahn.
