Welcome to Austria. The Arlberg railway connects the Austrian cities of Innsbruck in the Tyrol and Bludenz in the Vorarlberg. This is Austria's only east-west mountain railway. The 135.7 km line is oft troubled by avalanches, mudslides, rock falls and floods! Beautiful it is, but it’s hardly surprising that its future was once in doubt! But the 10km Arlberg tunnel at its heart has been expensively rebuilt and the ramps (mostly) doubled. The line is operated by ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) and frequented by international passenger trains as well as freight- it is the natural route between much of France and south Eastern Europe. We cover the line from Innsbruck to Feldkirch plus the county owned Montafonerbahn to Schruns – built to provide German industry with power but now an independent railway that still runs combined passenger and freight trains.. Along the way we visit the major landmarks including the Trisannabrücke, Landeck, St Anton, Bludenz - a stunning mountain railway. Running Time 60mins.
