We have been travelling south from Prague with train R635 to Česk? Budějovice and have now reached Bene?ov u Prahy, 40km south of the national capital. Plans for the railway south of Bene?ov u Prahy are quite ambitious. It is due to be transformed ? cash permitting ? into a 140 ? 160kph double track railway. This is to be achieved partly by upgrading the existing route and partly by the construction of new infrastructure. Česk? Budějovice is a city of nearly 100,000 and was an important staging post on this trade route to Italy long before there was a railway in town!
