In part one of the Maggiore Express we travel west from Locarno as far as the border with Italy at Ribellasca. Our run is over the Centovalli Railway with FART, Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi, who have their terminal adjacent to the SBB station alongside the Lake in Locarno. On the approach to Intragna is the signature engineering asset of the line- the viaduct over the Isorno, a tributary of the Melezza. This is one of the most scenic railway journeys in Switzerland, high enough to be dramatic- low enough not to be barren - a distinctly Italianate landscape!
