Information

Valencia- the third largest city in Spain after Barcelona and the capital. It lies on the Mediterranean coast and has wonderful beaches to the north but is also home to Spain’s largest port – indeed the 5th largest in Europe! The old city is one of the most beautiful in the country, bordered by a ‘dry’ river Turia which establishes a natural boundary beyond which lies the modern city, the beaches, the port and the spectacular motor racing track that was once host to the F1 circuit. The city has two major railway stations: Estació del Nord, the oldest, has surely the most beautiful façade in Europe, while the functional new one, Joaquin Sorolla, has only recently been opened for the AVE trains to Madrid, Alicante and Barcelona. To get about we use the Cercanías -suburban train network and the metro and trams. We discuss proposed developments to these system and how they will help reach the various city attractions as they are completed. By high-speed train Madrid is under two hours travel time from Valencia. The capital is a complete contrast to Valencia – it is after all one of the largest metropolitan centres in Europe. Arrival is at Atocha station. where there is a modern ‘airport-style” facility for the AVE trains and a separate station for regional trains and the suburban network. The old Atocha station still exists and has been converted into a spectacular mixed-use facility – an attraction in its own right! Getting around using the public transport network can be a bit daunting, but we walk you through it: suburban trains, the very extensive and high-quality metro and the trams -yes Madrid has trams! We visit the major interchanges (including Príncipe Pío) and take a trip out of town along the classic line to Barcelona as far as the pilgrim city of Alcalá de Henares.
