Our run today is from the Slovenian capital Ljubljana to Koper -the port City on the Adriatic coast.
We are guests of the Slovenian Railways passenger division aboard a Pendolino ETR 310, a close relative of the types: ETR 460/470/480 of the Italian Railways, the Czech Railways ‘Super City” and the former Cisalpino FS / SBB joint venture.
We travel over one of the most dramatic and demanding lines on the Slovenian network- an all electric run. The Slovenian network was electrified during the period between the wars and follows the Italian system - 3 kV. (pause) not an ideal system for such a mountainous route!
The SZ Pendolino, called in Slovakia an ICS 35 Intercity Sprint, runs daily all year between Maribor and Ljubljana, and between April and October it is extended to Koper for the benefit of tourists holidaying in the attractive town.
Active tilt allows the Pendolino to run 15 to 30 percent faster over the twisty line compared with conventional trains, saving about thirty minutes journey time. It’s a very busy route mainly used by freight trains to and from the port of Koper to Austria, Germany, Hungary, the Czech and Slovak Republics. The weather conditions are fine and the ETR310s wide windscreen allows for fine views. RT140 mins. DVD double disc or BluRay . Filmed October 2015
