We are on board an SZ Cargo Taurus (541-008), at the head of a train of an intermodals heading for the Austrian border station Spielfeld-Strasse. The challenging route between the port of Koper and Divaca Tovorna, with gradients of up to 25 per thousand, (2.5%) requires the use of a helper locomotive until Divaca station is reached. Here the tail-end locomotive is un-coupled and a single locomotive takes the train on to Ljubljana.
This is a picturesque and challenging line through dense forests- not much variation in the scenery, but stations and passing traffic -(sometimes 2 or more freight trains waiting to access the single track line) are more interesting. The line, affected by important modernisation work, is subject to one-way working between Prestranek and Rakek, forcing freight trains into long waits at passing loops, so that our journey for the 153 km run lasts more than six hours! (The wait at the loops has been edited out!) Upon arrival in Ljubljana the Taurus gives way to an elderly SZ 363 "Brigitte", which, by virtue of the lower axle weight, will take the train to the border station.
This is a slightly odd ride - some very unusual camera positions are tried - some (in our opinion some successful, some not!) To fill in the time waiting in loops the camera has been taken “off train” in places and there are some very nice ‘documentary style” shots of SZ freight trains. Un-edited this run would be 8hrs duration so it’s hardly surprising that arrival at Ljubljana is in the dark!
