Just Trains 14
Basel is the second largest city in Switzerland; the main rail entry point from Germany and the Benelux countries – including the North Sea Ports. There are two principal transit routes across the country to Italy: the eastern Gotthard mountain railway and the western Lötschberg. Both routes have been extensively modernised over the last 15 years – though the Lötschberg remains single track in part of its base tunnel. The entry point at Basel Bad (a German station just within Switzerland) sees regular freight services of all kinds from most of Germany.
We follow the Lötschberg west transit route through Olten, Murgenthal, Langenthal, and Herzogenbuchseeto Spiez on Lake Thun. There we watch traffic to and from the old and new Lötschberg routes. After our stop at the small town we journey over the mountain (with a couple of stops along the way) to Brig on the Simplon railway. The film highlights intermodal rail and we look at several new kids on the block: Cargo Beamer, Lohr, and MOVE.
