We start our exploration of Skåne (Scania) County at the logical point Malmö - Sweden’s third city – a city firmly connected to Denmark with the opening of the Öresund fixed link in 2000. The city’s connection with Denmark was further improved in late 2010 with the opening of the Malmö City Line – a tunnel connecting the bridge with a rebuilt Malmö Central station. This film looks to the future of rail in Sweden: We start with the Malmö – Lund quadrupling, a project to increase capacity from 460 to 650 trains per day. We look at the implications of the competing routes for the Swedish high-speed line in the county – two proposals: a line via Helsingborg and a line via Hässleholm. At Helsingborg we look at freight – the city hosts the second largest container port in Scandinavia and has one of the four large marshaling yards in Sweden. We look at the proposals for a northern Öresund crossing that would include a fast connection to Copenhagen. But there is an existing project to examine a new connection to Ängelholm and from there to the much delayed Hallandsås tunnel and the ABS/NBS to Gothenburg.
