Special order, delayed despatch
in this magnificent film of the Glacier Express the viewer is immersed in one of the most impressive and romantic train journeys of the world. Over a century ago travellers discovered the Alps and quiet mountain villages such as Zermatt and St Moritz changed into centres of health and adventure- especially as they became accessible by the amazing rail links. In the 1920s the Brig-Visp-Zermatt Bahn, Furka Overlap Bahn and the Rhatische Bahn created a direct connection between Wallis and Graubunden and the time was right for a luxury train between Zermatt and St Moritz- the Glacier Express became a reality on June 25th 1930. While the BVZ and RhB used electric locomotives the FO used steam until the 1940s. Because of snow and avalanche dangers the journey over the Furka Berstrecke below the Rhone glacier was not possible in winter until 1982 when the Furka base tunnel opened . During the 80s and 90s the Glacier Express grew from "the world's slowest express train" into one of Switzerland's top attractions with panorama coaches and top quality passenger service. In 2003 the BVZ and FO merged into the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn or MGB. The Glacier Express remains true to the tradition of luxury and top quality and many thousands of passengers from across the world make the journey annually.
