Follow the Flirts! (30mins) The FLIRT has been a remarkably successful train, perhaps the most successful train of its kind in modern times. The Swiss company sold the first FLIRTS (Fast Light Innovative Regional Trains) to SBB. That was in 2002. Since then sales have been made across Europe – sometimes with multiple operators in the same country! We find them in: Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Italy, Hungary, the Netherlands, Sweden and Finland.
Make a journey from the outskirts of Paris to the Mediterranean coast. (30mins) We start in the Parisian suburb of Brétigny-sur-Orge and travel the route of Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans, or PO, one of the first railways to be built in France. On the way to the coast we see CoRail hauled trains in their many liveries and TGVs of several varieties – lots of modern Regional trains in the liveries of their Department sponsors, and freight including the Modalohr intermodal and the Fruit Express from Perpignan to Paris.
Spend an hour at Freilassing (5mins) – a German station just west of Salzburg that is a mainline for both OBB and DB.
