Finland is the northernmost country within the EU and its capital Helsinki the most northerly metropolitan area in the world! The small city, just 600,000 lies on the Gulf of Finland 80km north of Tallinn, 300km from St Petersburg in Russia. Our train is IC 47 it’s Monday 3rd June 2013 and the time is 10.06 We are in the cab of a VR Sr2 better known to most perhaps as a Lok 2000 or SBB Re 460. The run starts with a multi-track mainline where we run parallel with a sister IC service on its way to Turku. Through the suburbs we pass commuter train after commuter train including the new FLIRTS, Swiss built but modified for Finnish winters. This is the line to Tampere and Oulu in the far north, one of only two continuous double track lines in Finland. With a small population but huge quantities of timber and minerals VR is a predominantly freight railway. The weather is fine and sunny. Narrated and filmed in High Definition. RT 62 mins. ©FHP 2013
