Information
The first in a series of regional documentaries covering the country, and where appropriate France’s immediate neighbours. The centre for our exploration is Thionville in the Department of Lorraine,  though we actually start at Somain and Valenciennes in the Nord-Pas-de Calais, make a foray into Luxembourg and stand on the point where the Mosel becomes the Moselle! Our primary focus is to see how FRET SNCF is getting along with the relatively new entrants in the freight business – EuroCargoRail et al– which is why we visit Somain and Valenciennes. This is line that links the Channel coast with Lorraine and Alsace. If the business between the UK and France is slack – that between Belgium and France (and onto Basel) seems to be thriving. Among other traffic we catch the ‘Glass Express” that runs to Turin, and view the competing routes from Antwerp. The busiest route to Germany is along the Moselle to Apach, Trier and Koblenz. It is a beautiful place to film trains! On the passenger side we view locals to TGVs, and our favourite is the Brussels Basel EC -and at the other end of the scale trams. We also film at AlcelorMittal, certainly Thionville’s largest freight customer who have just bought themselves some very smart new wagons.   Filmed in HD. Narrated. RT 70 mins  Published October 2013. ©FHP 2013
