In this instalment we work our way past Lake Balaton and the towns of central Hungary to the capital Budapest. At Budapest we look at the main railway stations Keleti and Nyugati and concentrate on the importance of the city as a freight turn-table for the Balkans and points beyond. The country's rail freight business MAV Cargo has been part of RailCargo Austria since March 2010. The business was taken over after a protracted negotiation period and RCA / MAV Cargo has already started to make significant changes to take advantage of the economies of scale. Together the two businesses employ over 11,000 personnel and transport 142,million tons of goods per year. This makes the combined company one of the big three in Europe alongside DB Schenker and PKP, the freight division of Polish state railways. Foreign locomotives in Budapest are not that uncommon- there are legions of them from OBB, but Slovakian railways also have a presence - such as the class 240 BoBo machine manufactured by Skoda in 1968.
