The Westbahn is the busiest mainline railway in Austria and one of the busiest in Europe for freight traffic. Linz is an industrial town on the Danube. It is the third largest city in Austria with a population of 200,000. It is home to Voestalpine Steel. The plant is a major source of rail traffic. While there is no specific freight avoiding line there are four non-platformed tracks south of the station that are used by most – but not all – freights passing through the city.

Wels, a city of 60,000, became significant because it was decided in the 1850 that the Westbahn branch to Passau is Germany should be built from Wels rather than from Linz. The town grew up as an important junction and later as a distribution node. Very approximately 2/3 of freight traffic takes the line to Salzburg while 2/3 of the passenger trains take the line to Salzbur Passenger trains we see: RailJets, OBB ICs, Westbahn FLIRTS, Historic stock and more.  Freight trains: OBB / RailCargoAustria, DB Schenker, CargoServ, RuhrTalBahn, and others. Trains include the Audi car parts train, wagonload and trainload, intermodals including the Mars train for Turkey.
