Probably the most beautiful region in the former DDR. This delightful area was ‘hidden’ during the communist era but since the fall of the wall has become a major tourist destination – first for the Germans themselves but more recently for international tourism. It is known in German as Sächsische Schweiz and in English as Saxon Switzerland. Together with Bohemian Switzerland in the Czech Republic it forms the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
This film is centred on a boat trip along the Elbe from Pirna 15km south of Dresden to the Czech border south of Bad Schandau. The river and the main railway from Dresden to Prague twists and turns through the Sandstone gorge – seldom more than 50m apart. We take advantage of the easy interchange between boat and rail to view the sights.
We visit: Stadt Wehlen-the Bastei bridge, icon of Saxon Switzerland, Kurort Rathen, Eisenbahnwelten- a magnificent LGB garden layout, Königstein- the fort with magnificent views along the Elbe, Bad Schandau- resort and starting point for the Kirnitzschtal Tramway that runs from the Stadtpark to the Lichtenhain Waterfall.
